Waddingtons and MONOPOLY Display
To coincide with MONOPOLY Leeds Takeover in summer 2024, visit a special permanent display focusing on the story of Waddingtons, with a particular emphasis on MONOPOLY.
Putting the spotlight on a major Leeds-rooted brand which became known across the world, this fun and educational display features lots of special exhibits, many donated by the Watson family who had a three-generation connection with the company spanning 80 years.
See 1890 trade cards and playing cards made for HLM Queen Elizabeth II in the 1970s, MONOPOLY board games including an original 1935 edition, a 1940s wartime set used to help prisoners of war escape, a 1960s deluxe set with silver and gold cast tokens, one of the 1990 MONOPOLY Leeds limited editions, and a bootleg 1950s Spanish version of MONPOLY “La Paz”. Spot other iconic Waddingtons games such as Cluedo and Scoop, as well as an assortment of MONOPOLY merchandise from the 1980s and 1990s.
Leeds was home to Waddingtons, Britain’s leading manufacturer of board games and playing cards, which produced the UK version of MONOPOLY from the 1930s and was responsible for the now famous London names and places in the game.
MONOPOLY Leeds Takeover comes to the city from 27 July to 1 September.
