Entry to Temple Newsam Estate is free of charge for carers.
How to find and enter Temple Newsam
Situated between Colton and Halton, Temple Newsam Estate is approximately 5 miles from Leeds and 1.5 miles from the nearest train station at Cross Gates.

Accessible toilets
Accessible toilets are available in the house, stables courtyard and in a fully accessible Changing Places facility next to the accessible playground.
Facilities in the changing places toilets include an emergency alarm, a fire alarm with a flashing light, rise and fall sink, bed and hoist. The Changing Places toilets and stables courtyard toilet are RADAR key operated.
Baby change
Baby changing facilities are available in the stable courtyard toilets and in the gender neutral ground floor toilet located in the house.
Disabled parking
There are several disabled parking spaces across the estate. Designated disabled bays are available in every car park.
The house car park provides level access to Temple Newsam House. Access from the other car parks to the house is by gradual uphill pathways.
Blind and partially sighted visitors
Guide and Assistance dogs
Dogs are welcome to all areas of Temple Newsam except the house, Home Farm and the café. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas.
Dogs need to be kept on leads in the gardens and courtyard but are free to roam around the rest of the grounds if under control. Water is available by the stables courtyard, near the toilets.
Visitors with physical disabilities and wheelchair users
Lifts and access to galleries in the House
A large proportion of the house is fully accessible.
Some things to note are that:
- benches and seats are available for visitors to use around the house
- a lift provides access to all floors for wheelchair users. The lift can accommodate one wheelchair at any time
- there is no wheelchair access to the south wing of the house or the cellars
- mobility scooters are not allowed within the house. However you can request a wheelchair from staff on arrival – Subject to availability.
Access in the grounds, Home Farm and the walled gardens
The grounds, gardens and walled gardens are fully accessible.
Some things to note are that:
- if you are using push wheelchairs, you may struggle on some of the gravel/cobbled areas, particularly in Home Farm and the stables courtyard
- the walled garden is fully accessible but the pathways are fairly steep in parts
- electric wheelchairs must be left outside the café and estate office
- many trails and walks are accessible but steep in parts
- there is a fully accessible playground next to Home Farm
- the first floor display areas of Home Farm are not accessible but interpretation is displayed on the ground floor
Borrow a wheelchair or scooter
A manual wheelchair is available from the house entrance to borrow on your visit. Unfortunately we cannot provide assistance around the house for wheelchair users.
There are a selection of motorised, manual wheelchairs and scooters available in the park for outdoor use. They are free to use – donations welcome.

Hearing impaired and deaf visitors
An audio tour enhancement is available for visitors to the house who have hearing difficulties.

There are areas within the house that are touch and handling friendly and there is plenty to see, touch and smell at Home Farm. Explore our What’s On section for upcoming handling sessions.
