Art on a Chair
The Art on a Chair upcycling project has been curated by students from Swarthmore Education Centre‘s Study Programme. Over the last summer the Study Programme collected old unwanted wooden chairs with the aim of upcycling them and selling them as unique works of art.
The design process involved sanding down the chairs, applying primer undercoat, drawing on the design, painting and then applying varnish. The whole project occupied the whole of the autumn term in the two-hour weekly Art Enterprise lessons. Artworks that inspired the chair designs included Katsushika Hokusai, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Henri Matisse’s Leaf Cutout.
Participant Jasmine said: ‘It was inspiring to learn how put all my creative skills onto a chair.’
