The British Library and Leeds City Museum to host Living with Machines
NewsIn summer 2022, Leeds City Museum will host a brand new exhibition inspired by the British Library’s ambitious research project, Living with Machines. The exhibition will shed fresh light on how advances in technology impacted the lives of ordinary people during the Industrial Revolution.
Your feedback
At this stage of exhibition planning we are turning to you, our visitors, to find out what you think of our current ideas. If you have a couple of minutes spare, please fill out our survey. All feedback will help us shape the exhibition for you.
The exhibition
Revisiting the national story of industrialisation, the exhibition will challenge the familiar story of “coal and cotton”, revealing new and untold stories that show how the introduction of machines into work – whether in factories, fields or homes – was changing the lives of ordinary people in Leeds. It will showcase a diverse range of objects, including paintings, drawings, clothing, metalwork, machinery, newspapers and documents from Leeds Museums & Galleries, the British Library and loans from other major UK museums & galleries.
We invite you to uncover the stories being told from the Industrial Revolution and consider how life in the twenty-first century has been impacted by advances in technology.
Find out more by visiting the Living with Machines website.
The exhibition builds on the British Library’s work with local partners and communities in Leeds to develop a growing programme of cultural events and learning activities since 2019.
