Now We Breath Free
29 September - 25 October
Leeds City Museum
Breathe Free is a 19-week trauma-informed recovery programme for women aged 16 and over who have experienced domestic abuse and complex trauma at Women’s Health Matters. Through the Photovoice process, women reflected on their journeys by reflecting on questions such as, "What shows your strength since starting or completing Breathe Free?", "What makes you feel safe or supported now?" and "What does your future look like now?" These questions encouraged women to capture images that reflected their experiences, their progress and the hopes they hold for the future.
Every photograph is deeply personal. They represent moments of courage, capturing peace, connection, freedom, or new possibilities. Together, these images remind us that recovery looks different for everyone and that even the smallest steps forward can hold great meaning.
The project was supported by the Breathe Free team alongside photographer Lizzie Coombes, creating a safe and creative space where women could explore their experiences and tell their stories in their own way, through their own lens.
As you explore this exhibition, we invite you to pause, reflect and celebrate the strength, courage and hope captured within these photographs. Every image is a reminder that healing is possible, that every voice matters, and that every woman deserves the opportunity to shape a future defined by hope rather than harm.
