A community group sat in Lotherton's Chapel

Lotherton’s Community Hub

Maintaining a living link with the past to secure its future.

Lotherton has a long history of a strong relationship with local villages and communities, dating back to the times of the Gasgoine family, who ran the estate from 1825 until 1968, where it was donated to Leeds City Council.

The heart of the Edwardian house still beats with authentic stories of people that loved and lived there. Our collection of family histories from local miners, gardeners, chauffeurs and maids are constantly being added to by people with a fond connection to Lotherton.

The Collection

In 2018, relatives of the Gascoigne family donated an archive which is now cared for and researched by community volunteers, and is a valuable resource for displays and exhibitions.

The archive highlights the family connection with Florence Nightingale through her letters and the diaries of her first cousin and best friend Marianne Nicholson, the mother of Gwendolen Gascoigne.

Get Involved

Lotherton volunteers are looking to develop tours and events that will showcase the rich heritage of Lotherton.

We currently work on a variety of community and family events, from special events in the medieval chapel, talks and concerts in Lotherton’s drawing room to projects reinstating the formal garden to its Edwardian glory with Garforth in Bloom.
