Access

We aim to provide a friendly, accessible environment for all our visitors.

How to find and enter Temple Newsam

Temple Newsam Estate is approximately 5 miles from Leeds and 1.9 miles from the nearest train station at Cross Gates.

Entrances

There are a number of entrances to Temple Newsam Estate by foot, and two by car. The House entrance is on the North of the building, a short walk from the House car park. The courtyard and Home Farm are located down a sloping path. The courtyard and Home Farm have cobbled floors.

What 3 Words

What3Words is a location app which provides exact location points based on 3 metre squares. Every 3 metre square of the world has been given a unique combination of three words which can be shared with friends and family, emergency services and more to pinpoint locations easily.

We have provided What3Words locations for key areas of our attractions to help you navigate your visit.

Accessible parking

There are several accessible parking spaces across the estate. Designated accessible bays are available in every car park.

The House car park provides level access to Temple Newsam House. Access from the other car parks to the house is by gradual uphill pathways.

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilets are available in the house, stables courtyard and in a fully accessible Changing Places facility next to the accessible playground.

Facilities in the changing places toilets include an emergency alarm, a fire alarm with a flashing light, rise and fall sink, bed and hoist. The Changing Places toilets and stables courtyard toilet are RADAR key operated.

Baby changing

Baby changing facilities are available in the stable courtyard toilets and in the gender neutral ground floor toilet located in the house.

Assistance dogs

Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas.

Dogs need to be kept on leads in the gardens and courtyard but are free to roam around the rest of the grounds if under control. Water is available by the stables courtyard, near the toilets.

Lifts and access to galleries in the House

A large proportion of the house is accessible.

  • There is no wheelchair access to the south wing of the house or the cellars
  • Mobility scooters are not allowed within the house. However you can request a wheelchair from staff on arrival – subject to availability.

Access in the grounds, Home Farm and the walled gardens

The grounds, gardens and walled gardens are fully accessible.

Some things to note are that:

  • If you are using push wheelchairs, you may struggle on some of the gravel/cobbled areas, particularly in Home Farm and the stables courtyard.
  • The walled garden is fully accessible but the pathways are fairly steep in parts
  • Electric wheelchairs must be left outside the Team Rooms and estate office
  • Many trails and walks are accessible but steep in parts
  • There is an accessible playground next to Home Farm
  • The first floor display areas of Home Farm are not accessible but interpretation is displayed on the ground floor

Borrow a wheelchair or scooter

A manual wheelchair is available from the house entrance to borrow on your visit. Unfortunately we cannot provide assistance around the house for wheelchair users.

There are a selection of motorised, manual wheelchairs and scooters available in the park for outdoor use. They are free to use – donations welcome.
