Home Farm and Play Barn
Home Farm
Wander through the historic cobbled yards and outbuildings to discover what working life was like at Home Farm and how the farm operates today. Find out about the people who lived and worked on the farm over the years, and what life was like for them.
Home Farm is a working farm and is home to lots of animals, many of which are rare breeds. See some of the rarest farm animals in Europe including the vaynol cow, white faced woodland sheep, middle white pigs and more. On special event days enjoy crafts, activities and demonstrations suitable for all the whole family.
Please note that only assistance dogs are permitted in the farm.
Toddler Farm Tours
Starting on 20 April, you can join us every Monday for our Toddler Farm Tours. Running from 1pm - 1:45pm, these fun, friendly sessions are open to everyone. Simply book your Home Farm and Play Barn ticket, and the toddler tour is included at no extra cost.
Conservation
Home Farm is a working farm and one of the largest rare breed centres in Europe. Conservation is at the heart of our work, and we are passionate about local farming, its links to heritage, and how we can preserve the industry for future generations.
All animals at Home Farm are native to the UK and most are classed as rare breeds by the Rare Breed Survival Trust. As a rare breeds centre we help to ensure the continuation of some of the oldest breeds of farm animals in the country, and provide a living legacy people can enjoy now and in the future.
During your visit you will run into all sorts of farm animals that you are unlikely to see anywhere else, including a wide variety of rare breed poultry. A full list of our rare breeds is available in our Rare Breeds guide.
Play Barn
Explore our indoor adventure play facility, perfect for families looking for fun whatever the weather. Set within the beautifully restored 100-year-old cow byre, the Play Barn offers:
- Two play zones – one for toddlers and one for children up to 12 years old, inspired by the animals and countryside of Temple Newsam
- A family friendly café – serving drinks and light bites, ideal for a relaxing break while the kids play
- A gift shop – featuring farm-themed toys, books, and local produce.
We can’t wait to welcome you and your family to Home Farm for a day of fun, discovery, and adventure.
Your ticket gives you a full day’s entry to Home Farm including a session in the Play Barn, so you can explore at your own pace and enjoy your time at Temple Newsam – whatever the season!
Admission is £9.00 per person, with under 3’s free. On weekends, bank holidays and in school holidays, your play session is limited to 90 minutes. On weekdays during term time there are no timed sessions. The Play Barn can be accessed at any time during opening hours. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing.
All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. The play area offers different levels of challenge, and not all areas will be accessible to all ages with parents or carers being the best judge of their child’s ability.
SEND Sessions
From 20 April, we’ll be introducing dedicated SEND sessions every Monday and Wednesday. These calmer, quieter sessions are designed to offer a more comfortable play experience and will run from 9am to 10am. We look forward to welcoming families who prefer a gentler start to the day.
Rhythm Time
Rhythm Time is a lively, multi‑sensory music and singing session for babies, toddlers and pre‑schoolers. Held every Thursday morning at 10:30am from 23 April (term time only) in the Play Barn, this 30 minute session is included in your Home Farm and Play Barn general admission ticket. It’s a lovely way to start your visit, and why not make a full day of it by exploring the farm afterwards.
Rhythm Time Leeds is passionate about the valuable developmental benefits of music. The carefully designed music classes for 0–5-year-old children mean that every fun activity enhances their development in a very specific way.
Everyone is welcome, simply book your Home Farm and Play Barn ticket and Rhythm Time is included.
Story Time
Starting on 20 April, we’ll be hosting Story Time sessions in the Play Barn every Monday from 10:30am - 11am. Story Time is included with your Home Farm and Play Barn ticket, and everyone is welcome to join in. If you’re planning a full day out, why not stay for lunch and stick around for our Toddler Farm Tour, also running every Monday from 1pm - 1:45pm.
