Come and experience the house filled with energy and life as dancers take over the grand halls and galleries. From elegant historical steps to high‑energy contemporary styles, Steps Through Time invites you to explore the house in a completely new way.
Enjoy performances, workshops and demonstrations from an exciting mix of local dance groups, each bringing their own flair to this impressive historic mansion.
This is a relaxed, all‑ages event - take part if you like, or simply sit back and enjoy the performances. No experience is needed - just come along and have fun!
Here is the running schedule for the day:
Session 1 (11am until 12 noon)
Arbeau:
Arbeau Dancers are Temple Newsam's resident historical dance group, covering approximately 600 years of dance. This session showcases Medieval dance - bransles and courtly dances.
Patrick Miller Ballroom Dancing:
Learn how to glide around the ballroom with elements of Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep and Waltz. No partner needed.
The Dance Studio (Jess Cooper – Jazz Dancers):
Our Modern Theatre Jazz class are ready to wow you with their "Fabulous" routine inspired by the musical, Sister Act!
Session 2 (12.30 pm until 1.30 pm)
Chinese Dance School:
Leeds Chinese Community School (LCCS), founded in 1966, is a charity dedicated to Chinese language, arts and culture in Leeds. Join in with the dance group for a celebration of Chinese heritage.
Halifax Historical Dance:
Transporting you back to the Regency era with a selection of dances from the time of Jane Austen and Anne Lister (“Gentleman Jack”). Enjoy the elegance and energy of early 19th-century social dancing, and then join us on the dance floor to learn and try some simple Regency dances for yourself.

Dance Tribe:
Dance Tribe formed in Leeds in 2021, uniting international dancers under Emma Clayton’s direction. Their new work, Daughters of the Land, draws on the group’s signature style and the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy. Join a taster session to explore creative movement for all ages and abilities.
Hello Hip Hop - Break dancing:
We’re excited to welcome special guest Philty from HelloHipHop, delivering a taster session in Breakin’ and Graffiti.
Open to all abilities, Phil and friends will demonstrate Breakin’, and then follow up with an easy-to-follow mini dance session. Children can jump in and showcase what they’ve learned, or colour in and take home their own custom name artwork- while making new friends and building confidence along the way. Get ready for fun, creativity and feel good vibes!
