Dr. Sophia Adams from The British Museum will talk about ‘The massive Melsonby Iron Age hoard: from bits of bits to wheels and wagons’.

Members of the public are welcome to join this meeting of The Prehistoric Society and Prehistory Research Section of the Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society, in collaboration with Leeds City Museum.

The Melsonby hoard is a vast deposit of Iron Age artefacts found in North Yorkshire by a metal detectorist. It is considered one of the largest and most important Iron Age hoards found in Britain and recently declared Treasure.

Consisting of ironwork from at least seven vehicles, ornate harness pieces, cauldrons, spears and more, this 2000-year-old deposit is astounding. In this talk we will explore the discovery together, marvelling at the objects, peering through x-rays and revealing how these items were buried and how they are creating the opportunity to review past understandings in new light.

This event is free, booking is required.

Leeds City Museum is a Give What You Can venue. We don't want price to be a barrier to a great experience. Simply pick the price you can give when you arrive at the museum, and enjoy your visit.
