Join our nature trails, perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. Take a picnic by the lakeside gardens or have some family fun in our adventure playground.
Temple Newsam boasts three lakes or ‘Menagerie Ponds’, each with a different feel. The lower lake is simply set in parkland; the middle lake which is the largest of the three is bordered by beds of damp loving perennials including candelabra primula and hostas.
Cross the bridge and bear left to find the grass and bamboo garden bordering the small top lake, then follow the path as it rises towards the Walled Garden.
Walking, riding & cycling at Temple Newsam
There are many miles of informal paths that have developed over the years at Temple Newsam that are great ways to explore the park and wider estate. They’re all suitable to be explored on foot, and maps on the welcome boards as you arrive provide an outline guide.
The Byelaws state that horse-riding and cycling are only permitted on either definitive bridleways or on permissive routes.

The Temple Newsam Trailway is a route that can be used by walkers, riders and cyclists.
There are cycle stands at the walled garden and the farm car park and cycle lockers in the stable courtyard so that you can safely leave your bike to explore further afield on foot. Horse boxes can be parked in the House car park.
