Leeds Discovery Centre Visual Story
Use our visual story to plan your arrival and visit to Leeds Discovery Centre.
When I visit Leeds Discovery Centre, there are lots of things I might see, touch/feel, hear or smell.
During my visit to Leeds Discovery Centre I will be attending either a workshop or a tour.
If I arrive by car:
I will see an entrance to the Leeds Discovery Centre car park.
I can drive in and park for free.
Before I visit Leeds Discovery Centre
I will need to book a tour or workshop. I can do this by calling 0113 378 2100 or emailing discovery.centre@leeds.gov.uk
If I would like to visit at a quieter time I can ask about this when booking.
I can download a sensory map of the museum before my visit.
When I get to Leeds Discovery Centre:
I will see a big building.
I might hear traffic, birds, or the building site near by.
To get to the main museum entrance
I can use the ramp on the right-hand side of the museum.
Or I may want to use the stairs at the front.
To enter the museum
I might need to ring the doorbell that is at the right of the door.
When the doors open I will hear a high pitched noise. This will stop when the doors close.
When I walk into the Reception Area
I may see a member of staff sitting behind the desk.
I might hear people talking and moving around.
When signing in at reception
I will need to tell the member of staff what event I have booked in for.
I will need to write my name down on a sign in sheet.
I may want to let someone know if I have any additional needs that will help me enjoy my visit.
Before my tour or workshop starts
I might want to use the toilet.
To find the toilets I can ask a staff member for directions or I can follow the signs down the corridor.
Before my tour or workshop starts:
I might want to sit down.
I will see a purple bench to the left of the reception desk that I can sit on.
In this area I can also eat and drink any drinks or snacks I have brought with me.
When it is time for my tour or workshop to start:
I will be greeted by a member of staff who will tell me about the museum and will explain what I will be doing.
I will need to listen to their instructions. If I do not understand anything I may want to ask questions.
If I am attending a workshop
I will be taken down the corridor and into the education space.
Walking down the corridor
I will see display cases with objects in them.
I might want to ask questions about the displays. The tour guide will be happy to answer them.
Entering the education space
I will see some tables and chairs, on these tables I might see some craft activities or some objects from the collection.
I could smell materials like paint or glue.
When my workshop starts:
The workshop leader will tell me and the rest of the group what we will be doing.
If I missed something or do not understand anything that the leader has said I can ask questions.
During the workshop:
I might be given the opportunity to handle the objects or take part in a craft activity.
During the workshop:
I might need to use the toilet. To find the toilets I can ask a staff member for directions or I can follow the signs down the corridor.
I might need a break from the workshop. If I ask a member of staff they can tell me where I can find a quiet space.
At the end of my workshop:
I will hear the group leader pause the workshop and ask everyone to finish up their activities.
I will be given the opportunity to go on a store tour. The tour is not compulsory and I can choose not to take part. If I wish to skip this part of the workshop then I should let the group leader know.
If I am attending a store tour:
I will be taken down the corridor to the entrance of the store.
Walking down the corridor:
I will see display cases with objects in them.
I might want to ask questions about the displays. The tour guide will be happy to answer them.
At the beginning of my tour:
I will be stood at the entrance of the store.
I will be able to see a selection of objects.
The tour guide will tell me what we are going to see and do.
As I enter the lobby:
I will hear a high pitched noise. This will stop once the door closes.
It may be dark in the room but the lights will turn on when people move into the space.
In the store lobby:
I will see lots of objects around the space.
I might feel a little cramped. If I do not like it in here I can let the tour guide know and they will move through the space quickly.
Entering the store:
I will hear another high pitched noise. This will again stop when the door closes.
I will see a large room with lots of objects all around me.
Walking around the store:
I might hear the sound of the fans and ventilation systems in the background.
I might feel cold as the temperature is kept at 16 degrees celsius.
Walking in between the racks:
I will see objects and stuffed animals (taxidermy).
I might hear people talking.
If I feel uncomfortable I can choose to skip this part of the tour and the guide will show me some other objects.
Opportunities to handle objects:
During the tour the guide may offer me an opportunity to handle some objects.
If I do not want to touch them I can choose to just look instead.
Exiting the store:
I will hear another high pitched noise as the door opens. This will again stop when the door closes.
It may be dark in the lobby but the lights will turn on when people move into the space.
