Living with Death highly commended at M+H Awards

Living with Death, an exhibition held at Leeds City Museum in 2024, has been awarded highly commended in the Museums and Heritage Awards.

The award for Temporary or Touring Exhibition of the Year, with a budget of less than £80,000, required nominees to highlight excellence in creation of a temporary exhibition. It also asked that the project evidenced its effectiveness in attracting new and diverse audiences.

Living with Death, which ran from 3 May 2024 to 5 January 2025, explored how different cultures experience death, dying, and bereavement. The exhibition looked at how humans have developed knowledge and skills in response to life ending.

A key aim of the exhibition was to encourage conversation around death and dying, with a secluded area of the space set up for people to reflect and share their stories.

The team behind Living with Death spent the year prior carrying out consultations with groups and indiiduals to find out what people would want to see in an exhibition of this nature. They also worked with a diverse range of organisations to ensure that the themes and topics were as inclusive and accessible as possible.

The exhibition saw over 66,000 visitors during its run, and was accompanied by a series of events which included specialist tours, death cafes, creative workshops, and a sold-out museum lates event.
