Three recent graduates from Leeds’ art schools introduce their work and talk about sculpture-making today

This year’s recipients of the Acceleratory Bursary are Elrick Boldy, Ewan Summerton and Iona Ogilvy-Stuart. Funded by Leeds Art Fund and now in its second year, the Bursary aims to support artists through the transition out of art school into their early career. It provides them with access to a shared studio at Assembly House, as well as mentoring from professionals and more experienced artists.

In conversation with Leeds Art Gallery curator Dr Elizaveta Butakova, Elrick, Ewan and Iona will discuss their work, which is focused on making sculptural forms. The materials they employ are diverse and wide-ranging, spanning steel, bronze, found objects, natural materials, and even living bacterial byproducts. They will discuss how their work has developed over the past year, the processes and challenges of working with their chosen materials, and how they relate to contemporary artistic practice today.

Located in Armley, Assembly House is home to over 70 contemporary artists and creatives, and hosts regular events by and for studio artists and the surrounding community in Armley. Talk attendees are invited to visit the artists’ group exhibition RUST, which will take place at Assembly House Tues 13th-Sun 18th October.

About the Artists

Exploring the liminality of communication through asemic writing, Elrick Boldy’s practice considers the boundaries between written language and shape. Interested in the bodily action of writing, his practice considers idiosyncrasies in the handwritten word and how this translates to non-semantic mark-making. Elrick’s steel sculptures are formed into curved organic shapes, echoing expressions from inscribed asemic signs.

Iona Ogilvy-Stuart’s interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, drawing, printmaking and photography, exploring the integration and disintegration of materials. Her sculptural work contemplates biomorphic, bodily forms and the material processes that occur between intention and finished object. Foregrounding the temporary materials that enable bronze production rather than bronze’s cultural status, Iona’s work questions hierarchies of value between the permanent and ephemeral.

In an era defined by digital surveillance and technological advancements, Ewan Summerton’s practice seeks to expose and interrogate the hidden infrastructures that govern modern daily life. Through sculpture and video-based works, he aims to materialise the often-invisible mechanisms of control within surveillance. Ewan’s work encourages viewers to consider the implications of living under inescapable observation, evoking discourse on autonomy, privacy, and the human condition in the digital age.

The Accelerator Bursary is sponsored by the Leeds Art Fund and delivered by Leeds Art Gallery in partnership with Assembly House.
