The 1152 Club is a history and heritage talks series for people aged 55 and over, held at Abbey House Museum. Join us on the first Tuesday of every month 10.15am - 11.15am.

We meet in the Gatehouse at Abbey House Museum one Tuesday a month. Doors open at 10am and talks begin at 10.15am. Tea and coffee is provided on a Pay As You Feel basis. Highlights of a selection of upcoming talks can be found below.

Tuesday 3 March

Irish History Month. Side by Side: The Remittance Generation & The Windrush Generation

This session will focus on the lived experiences of Irish and West Indian communities living, working and socialising 'side by side' in the Chapeltown and Potternewton areas of Leeds.  

Co-ordinated by the Irish Arts Foundation, and featuring individuals from organisations including Leeds Irish Health and Homes, Leeds Black Elders Association, the David Oluwale Memorial Association and the Leeds Jamaica Society. 

The session will include short films, a talk, and live music.

Friends of Farsley Rehoboth Chapel talk about their work, to tie in with a new display at Abbey House Museum.

Reelise: A talk about a community exhibition exploring Leeds and film at Leeds Industrial Museum (Armley Mills), with Assistant Community Curator Aleks Fagelman.

Children’s Clothing Through The Ages, with Curator of Dress and Textiles Natalie Raw 

Tuesday 4 August 

Victorian Circuses of Leeds, with Steve Ward.

This talks is a 'virtual' tour of the city centre looking at the sites of nineteenth century circus venues.

Weird and Wonderful Silver, with Assistant Community Curator at Temple Newsam, Rathi Tamilselvan      

Tuesday 6 October

A history of The Leeds Library, with librarians Jane Riley and Anna Goodridge. 

Tuesday 3 November

Common Wealth War Graves Commission: Architecture & Renovations, with Brian Joyce.

Tuesday 1 December

Yorkshire trams- A Forgotten Era, with Bill Jagger. 

A look at historic photographs of the street tramways of the towns and cities of Yorkshire from the 19th Century to 1960. The talk shows images of horse, steam and electric trams and looks at their surroundings and background.
