We Bathe In Starlight
14 November 2025 - 19th April 2026
Leeds Art Gallery
As you step into the warmth of the Ziff gallery you will discover the poetic responses of Arts & Minds members, nestled into the collections of Victorian paintings were Grimshaw’s artworks have hung.
Taking inspiration from the artists atmospheric works, the group began a creative journey, learning about his life and works with curator Nigel Walsh and explored the wider history of Leeds Industrial Heritage through the Victorian period with Community curator Aleks Fagelman.
Guided by local poets Michelle Scally Clarke, Peter Spafford and Joanna Jowett, the group took a closer look at the paintings Iris, Reflections on the Aire On Strike, 1879 and Reflections on the River Thames, Westminister, London exploring a variety of approaches to developing their creative writing.
Gathering some of the words that had sprung forth from the poetry sessions, the group were invited to use the printing presses at Leeds Industrial Museum, learning the history, process and materials involved with Keeper Chris Sharp and Community Curator Aleks Fagelman, to create their own unique letterpress prints.
The final session brought all the discussions that had been had throughout the project to the table, creating further space to make decisions on the display and hang, the content and the activation of the work with sustainable materials and practices in mind.
During the run of the exhibition, you will find that the work evolves with the space activated through performance and interventions by group members and wider community partners, shifting the focus and layering the narrative and your experience of the space.
The Arts & Minds Network brings together people in Leeds who believe the arts can promote mental wellbeing.
