Website Sustainability Commitment
Leeds has declared a climate emergency and, as part of our climate action plan, the council’s ambition is to achieve net zero carbon emissions as quickly as possible and to boost our city’s resilience to the changing climate.
Our 3 website sustainability practices are Web Performance Optimization, Content Findability and Usability, and Green Web Hosting.
To conserve energy, we endeavour to:
Web Performance Optimization:
- Use the methods outlined below to reduce page loading time and as such, the energy needed to load a page.
- Reduce the use of video across our website, and optimize the video that we do use. Optimising video could include, but is not limited to: reducing the size, not using auto play, hosting videos on a platform who compress videos and can compress data in a more sustainable way, such as YouTube, or directing users to you YouTube directly.
- Optimise image use by reducing size and image type appropriately across the website.
Content Findability and Usability
- Optimise SEO to help audiences find the right content without searching longer than needed.
- Deliver an efficient and quick user journey to help audiences spend less time searching on our website.
- Content is presented in a concise manner, spaced for easy reading and important information is displayed clearly.
- Design mobile-first content, ensuring the most essential content is prioritised and loading time is reduced.
Green Web Hosting and CMS system
- Hosting our website on sustainable servers using green energy, we are proud to be hosted green now. (Add hosted green verification image)
- Using a sustainable website provider who uses blocks, reducing development time and data, and who provides regular updates and maintenance to ensure website does not need redevelopment after a few years.
- Review and archive blog posts over 3 years old to reduce content stored on our servers which isn’t used.
- Use a CMS system that does not have a media library, reduce data content stored that isn’t used.
