The Anglo Saxons are here! - School Workshop
Available at Temple Newsam Home Farm
Bring your classroom learning to life with our exciting, hands-on educational experience that transports pupils straight into the heart of the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Neu Husum (new houses) at Home Farm, Temple Newsam. Designed specifically for Key Stage 2, and fully aligned with National Curriculum history objectives, this full-day workshop lets children discover the past through active, memorable, and meaningful learning.
Duration: Full day (10.00am – 2.30pm) | Suitable for: KS2, SEND | Sessions run: Monday – Friday
Availability: Sessions run from April – October. Please note that many of the day’s activities take place outdoors.
Ahead of the workshop we will discuss SEND/access needs if required and share health & safety guidance.
During the morning session we will:
Meet the theow, ceorl, and thegn;
Learn the roles and responsibilities that kept the settlement thriving;
Use real quern stones to grind grain into flour, before making bread ready to be baked in our communal oven;
Discover the importance of craftsmanship, farming, storytelling, and leadership.
In the afternoon session:
Our re-enactors bring the dramatic local Battle of Winwaed to life, setting the scene for pupils to take part in an energetic session of shield and sword practice. Children learn basic defence techniques (safe and supervised), work together as a unit, and prepare to protect their settlement from looming threats;
Engage in an epic finale as the sun dips on the Anglo-Saxon day, by gathering around to listen to the ancient tale of Beowulf and Grendel. This atmospheric storytelling session introduces pupils to one of the oldest surviving stories in the English language - sparking imagination, awe, and a love of myth and legend.
