Guide and Assistance dogs

Dogs are welcome to all areas of Temple Newsam except the house, Home Farm and the café. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas.

Dogs need to be kept on leads in the gardens and courtyard but are free to roam around the rest of the grounds if under control. Water is available by the stables courtyard, near the toilets.

Visitors with physical disabilities and wheelchair users

Lifts and access to galleries in the House

A large proportion of the house is fully accessible.

Some things to note are that:

  • benches and seats are available for visitors to use around the house
  • a lift provides access to all floors for wheelchair users. The lift can accommodate one wheelchair at any time
  • there is no wheelchair access to the south wing of the house or the cellars
  • electric wheelchairs are not allowed in the house and pushchairs cannot be pushed around the house

Access in the grounds, Home Farm and the walled gardens

The grounds, gardens and walled gardens are fully accessible.

Some things to note are that:

  • if you are using push wheelchairs, you may struggle on some of the gravel/cobbled areas, particularly in Home Farm and the stables courtyard
  • the walled garden is fully accessible but the pathways are fairly steep in parts
  • electric wheelchairs must be left outside the café and estate office
  • many trails and walks are accessible but steep in parts
  • there is a fully accessible playground next to Home Farm
  • the first floor display areas of Home Farm are not accessible but interpretation is displayed on the ground floor

Borrow a wheelchair

A manual wheelchair is available from the house entrance to borrow on your visit. Unfortunately we cannot provide assistance around the house for wheelchair users.

A manual wheelchair and all-terrain motability scooters are available to use outdoors.

Please contact us before your visit to ensure that our mobility aids are available.

Hearing impaired and deaf visitors

An audio tour enhancement is available for visitors to the house who have hearing difficulties.

Access provision for groups

There are areas within the house that are touch and handling friendly and there is plenty to see, touch and smell at Home Farm. Explore our What’s On section for upcoming handling sessions.

If a member or members of your group require access provision, please contact us before your visit.
