Two adults and a child looking at portriats on a stairway in Temple Newsam

Tales of Temple Newsam

Starting in 2025, Tales of Temple Newsam will collect people's living memories of Temple Newsam through oral histories. There are lots of stories to tell – from first love and weddings, to truancy and (potential) break-ins!

Oral histories are a primary source of historical information that focus on personal recollections of a place, time and/or event through recorded interviews. This project will be a first of its kind for Temple Newsam as we seek to collect stories digitally in order to preserve them in an accessible format which has longevity.

While the house and its collections have been historically well researched by various academics and curators, Temple Newsam has only recently begun to include more diverse voices beyond a more traditional, scholarly,  sphere.

We'll be sharing some of the personal memories and stories of Temple Newsam from individuals on this page throughout the project.
