Christmas shoppers can take art from gallery’s on loan masterpieces
Press release, 28 November 2025
The playful piece is one of 24 lithographs produced by Matisse in the 1940s with the intent of bringing art to young children and was on display during Leeds City Museum’s recent Miffy exhibition.
French artist Matisse is widely considered to be one of the leading lights of a revolutionary shift in the visual arts which took place in the early 20th century.
His remarkable work is one of more than 140 by a huge range of artists available to loan as part of the gallery’s scheme, which offers participants the chance to display works from the gallery’s collection in their own homes or businesses.
Selection events run several times a year with the latest taking place at the gallery this week until this Sunday (Nov 30). Anyone interested in becoming a member can attend the events to find out more, browse the artworks available and join the scheme.
Jane Bhoyroo, Principal Keeper at Leeds Art Gallery, said: “The Picture Library is a much-loved part of Leeds Art Gallery’s programme. This season we’re excited to introduce several new works to the lending scheme, from those by young artists in the city, to historic prints. The Picture Library is open to residents across Yorkshire and a gift membership makes for a wonderfully unique Christmas present.”
Established in 1961, The Picture Library has remained hugely popular ever since, with works available to borrow including oils, watercolours, drawings, photographs and a variety of prints.
Loans are available to both individuals and businesses, with subscription charges varying. Gift memberships are also available. Further selection events will also take place throughout the coming year.
Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said: “Offering the chance for the gallery’s amazing collection to be displayed in homes across the city is a wonderful expression of the idea that art should be accessible and available to everyone.
“Bringing these beautiful artworks into our communities gives those people taking part the chance to experience and appreciate art in a completely new and individual way and to put culture at the heart of our homes and families.”
