Exhibition Encounters

At Leeds Art Gallery

A series of enjoyable cross-curricular workshops bringing together visual art and another area of learning in school to enrich understanding within both subjects. Pupils will get up close and respond to artworks displayed in our temporary exhibitions.

Lines of Enquiry

Supporting the teaching of drawing, this workshop explores different purposes and strategies for drawing - from observation, from memory and from imagination – whilst developing knowledge and understanding of art and artists. Pupils will encounter diverse art forms through a series of creative provocations that will foster confident drawing, art enquiry and critical thinking skills. Leeds Art Gallery is the 2026 recipient of the Big Draw Creative Innovation Award

Poetic Art

Guided investigation of sculpture will collect a rich vocabulary to be manipulated in experimental sentences that form a poetic response to an exhibition. Groups will work with ideas as they emerge intuitively promoting enjoyment in the possibilities of imagination, language and writing. Workshop outcomes could be refined back in school to produce crafted poetry inspired by art.

Documenting Our World (from early November)

Spending time with photographs that offer active evidence of people coming together to share ideas and opinions for social justice, this workshop will engage with questions asked when making a photograph, acknowledge the ways photography has changed as cameras have changed, and reflect on making, using and experiencing photography in school and at home.  Employing pupil centred strategies to foster visual literacy alongside oracy, it can contribute to teaching and learning in History, Art and Design, Photography or PSHE.
