Wool and Rural Crafts on the farm
Discover the world of wool and rural crafts down on the farm this summer.
We’ll be in traditional costume to show you how to card raw wool, that is separating and straightening sheep’s wool with two brushes so that it can be used to make yarn for knitting. You’ll see how a drop spindle works to make the yarn and then watch weaving take place – plus have the chance to have a go yourself!
From 12 – 2pm we will be doing animal encounter sessions focussing on sheep, particularly one of rarest breeds on the farm, the Whitefaced Woodlands. You’ll hear about the life of a Victorian shepherd, local mop fairs of the past and how Leeds grew to be a prosperous city because of the woollen trade.
Did you know?
We work closely with local craftspeople to work our sheep wool into yarn which can be used to make clothes, rugs, and decorative items! Check out The Peg Loomer to see what happens to our wool once it leaves the farm.
Explore the historic mansion with hidden treasures, encounter rare breed animals at Home Farm and stroll through the impressive grounds and gardens. Find out more about things to see and do at Temple Newsam.
