Blot on the Landscape
24 January 2022 - 20 December 2023
Venue Temple Newsam
Just 40 years ago the peaceful, lush green landscape that we see at Temple Newsam today was scarred by open cast mining. A deep shaft coal mine also stood on the estate until 1968, only 10 minutes walk from the Tudor/Jacobean house.
Previously on display in Temple Newsam House, this community-led exhibition tells the unearthed stories of the miners, their families and the impact on the wider community of the area during these difficult and often turbulent times.
On display in the Lady Isabella Suite (located in the Stable Courtyard) from 24 January, entry to the exhibition is free. The exhibition will be open from 10 am to 4 pm subject to availability. Please check ahead of visiting us via the contact details on our visit page.
There is also a signposted walking trail around the park exploring locations associated with this coal mining history. A trail map leaflet (PDF, 6MB) is available online and in the Temple Newsam shop.
