A 6 week introduction to hand embroidery perfect for any beginner at Leeds Discovery Centre. Learn blanket, chain, stem, and others stitches to create your own sampler and textile artwork, while you explore the Leeds Museums & Galleries collection.
6 – 8pm on Wednesdays, 20 September – 25 November 2023.
The course costs £65 per person. Materials and tea and coffee provided. Suitable for beginners, adults age 18+.
Week 1: Introduction to the course, tour of Leeds Discovery Centre.
Using the collections at LDC, find inspiration for your next embroidery project and start a journal of your ideas. You will be shown tools and equipment used in hand embroidery, learn embroidery stiches on a simple sampler.
Week 2: Curator talk
Join Assistant Curator of Dress and Textile, Vanessa Jones as she discusses the history of samplers in the collection. Continue to learn simple stitches used in embroidery to add to your sampler.
Week 3: Create texture using different stiches
Continue to fill your sampler with embroidery stiches, fabric, and your favourite designs ideas from the collections at LDC.
Week 4: Applying applique to add colour
Develop ideas from your ideas journal and sampler to begin planning your textile artwork, learn how to combine stiches, and how to use Bondaweb to apply applique to your work.
Week 5: Placement and design
Continue to work on your own design with support and create your own unique embroidered textile work of art using the methods you have learnt.
Week 6: Complete final artwork and evaluation of course
Finish off your design, and learn how to mount and display your finished piece.
