Walking tours with artist James Thompson
18 September 2021
Venue Leeds Art Gallery
To coincide with Spatial Drifts currently on display in Central Court, artists James Thompson and KP Culver will be leading a series of free walking tours exploring former art spaces within a one-mile radius of Leeds Art Gallery.
Presenting a history of DIY artist culture in the context of the gallery’s changing architecture and wider trends in urban development in the city, the tour will draw attention to hidden stories and debates around the value of spaces for art in Leeds today. Framed through the lens of two characters – the artist and the property developer – they will draw from statements, newspaper articles, interviews and real estate sales brochures to present alternative visions of each site across multiple dimensions.
The same tour will be performed four times, beginning on the front steps at the entrance to Leeds Art Gallery. Each tour will last approximately 60-80 minutes and follow a route from the gallery, finishing at The Electric Press building on Great George Street.
