Light Night Leeds: Cumulative Engagement

Venue: Leeds Art Gallery

Come to Central Court to experience the immersive sound and light sculpture Cumulative Entanglement by multidisciplinary artist and music producer Rian Treanor.
This ambitious work emerged from a two-year artistic residency, exploring accessible multiplayer music systems with Rotherham Sight and Sound (RSS) members Kathleen Allott, Anne Goss and Mick Gladwin. RSS is a sensory service for people with visual impairments.
The large tactile form recalls structures of support and play. The complex network of tangled interconnections functions as both an obstacle and a playground for embodied interaction. Visitors are invited to collectively feel their way through the environment and discover surprising correlations between touch, sound and light – what Rian calls ‘sensory discontinuities’.
This collaborative artwork is programmed jointly by Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute in a special partnership to mark the start of the Beyond the Visual research season at the Henry Moore Institute. This series of events will explore engagements with contemporary sculpture using senses other than sight. It seeks to challenge the dominance of sight in the making and appreciation of art and invites wider questions around the nature of artworks and the varied ways in which they can be experienced.
The research season is part of Beyond the Visual: Blindness and Expanded Sculpture, a ground-breaking research and exhibition collaboration between University of the Arts London, the Henry Moore Institute and Shape Arts. Consultation and collaboration with blind and partially blind artists and audiences is a crucial part of the project. The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and will culminate in a free exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute in November 2025.
The installation is in Central Court, First Floor of Leeds Art Gallery and will be on display during the October half term holidays.
