Chapeltown Word Junction 2022 is a one-day take-over of Leeds Art Gallery, organised by Chapeltown Arts in partnership with Leeds Art Gallery. It is a literary event, inviting audiences to engage with contributions from established and emerging Leeds based writers, poets and artists, primarily descendants of previously colonised countries. The event will elicit emotional, spiritual, creative and historical responses to the exhibition Shifting Perspectives, which explores colonial legacies within the Leeds Art Gallery collection.

Sandra Whyles, co-director of Chapeltown Arts, says – “There will be catharsis, there may be pain but these processes are necessary to resist neo-colonialist tropes that continue to be part of our everyday lives, liberate thinking and transform minds.”

The event is an important artistic step in the process of decolonising this public institution and ensuring that the creative output of all the citizens of Leeds is included and welcomed into our city’s art gallery.

Artists, writers, and poets include: Karen Babayan (multidisciplinary artist), Asher Jael (writer and World Re-imagined coordinator), Seki Lynch (author and poet), Taiwo Ogunyinka (poet), Emily Zobel Marshall (writer and lecturer in Postcolonial literature at Leeds Beckett University), Corinne Bailey Rae (singer/songwriter), SAA-UK and Sable Radio, Joe Williams (author and actor – Heritage Corner). More to be announced.

Please note the galleries will be open as usual until 5pm on the day of the Chapeltown Word Junction takeover. The evening session 5-7pm will be a celebratory event in the Tiled Hall café, open to all and featuring DJs from Sable Radio. Bookings will be taken for individual performances and workshop sessions on arrival at the gallery and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please book your free ticket via Eventbrite so we can send you updates about the event.
