Dance in Leeds mural

Artist: Herfa Thompson

Subject: Dance in Leeds

With thanks to: Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Sharon Watson MBE DL, Nina Lewis, RJC Dance Leeds and Phoenix Dance Leeds.

At its core, this mural is inspired by the joy of dance. The movements of the painted bodies, the surrounding shapes and the colour palette were all chosen to communicate this joy.

Beyond joy, the artist was inspired by the interconnected histories of Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Chapeltown and Phoenix Dance in Harehills. You can find out more about the history of dance in Leeds on Leeds Museums and Galleries MyLearning page Learning to Dance in Leeds • Leeds Dance • MyLearning.

This is one of five murals commissioned as part of the Leeds Museums and Galleries project On the pitch, off the pitch: Sporting Heritage in Leeds. #DYC on the pitch, off the pitch is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.
