Caribbean Cricket Club mural

Artist: Jioni Warner
Subject: Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club
With thanks to: Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club, Howard Gardner, Alford Gardner

Across a series of conversations, members shared their ideas about what should feature in a mural celebrating the Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club.

Current members felt it was important to reference as many players as possible through the artwork. Therefore, central to the image is the black and white illustration of the clubs first team. The artist diligently copied this from a photograph, which you can see below.

The background and surrounding illustrations capture elements of West Indies culture. These include the dominoes in the top left corner and flags from countries across the West Indies, drawn onto the suitcase.

‘98 RIP’ in the top right-hand corner pays tribute to Alford Gardner, one of the founding members of Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club who passed away in 2024.

This is one of five murals commissioned as part of the Leeds Museums and Galleries project On the pitch, off the pitch: Sporting Heritage in Leeds. #DYC on the pitch, off the pitch is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.
